Continuing the Acts of Hessed of Rabanit Kanyevsky z"l

Nosson Yafe, who heads the Kupat Ha’ir charity organization, told Arutz Sheva on Wednesday about some of the many acts of kindness and charity performed by Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, who passed away suddenly during the holiday of Sukkot at the age of 79.

Her funeral was attended by tens of thousands, both men and women who recognized her greatness, although no eulogies could be said as they are forbidden during holidays.

Kupat Ha’ir is headed by the Rebbetzin’s husband, Rav Chaim Kanievsky, Shlita, a foremost posek (halakhic decision maker) in the hareidi-religious sector. She herself was the daughter of the venerable sage, Rav Shalom Yoseph Eliashuv, Shlita, the recognized rabbinic leader of hareidi-religious Jewry today. 

Rabbi Kanievsky said of his wife that the chapter in Proverbs about the Eshet Chayil (Woman of Valour), praising women and traditionally sung on Friday nights at the Sabbath table, contains the expression "Her husband is renowned in the city gates [as a scholar among judges who once would sit at the city gates, ed.]" whch sounds like praise for the husband, not the wife. However, he explained, it is only through the good deeds of his wife that he - or any other Torah scholar - could develop in Torah. It is the wife of the family that encourages her husband to learn Torah and frees him to do so, which is what, he said, his pious wife had done all their married life, so that the words actually refer to her. 

And in that vein, the story is told of how Rebbetzin Kanievky bought a special thermos for her father, who learned Torah until the middle of the night, so his wife, her mother, would not have to get up to make him a hot drink. Her mother returned it, saying: "How could you take that mitzva - good deed - from me? This is my part of his Torah learning. I never expected my own daughter to do a thing like that !"

Yafe, who described Rebbetzin Kanievsky as “the grandmother of the entire nation of Israel,” said, “Most people have probably heard about her, read about her, or seen her, because from dawn to dark people from all over the world came” to see her and get her advice and blessings.

“Any problem they bore when they came in became lighter when they left,” he said. “The Rebbetzin took care of them.”

“She would suggest different types of things to different people, and she also used to give a lot of encouragement,” Yafe said. “Everybody felt they received something from her. She helped tens of thousands of women of all ages.”

The Rebbetzin’s kindness will not end with her death, Yafe promised, because Kupat Ha’ir will continue what her endeavors.

“We used to bring in donors daily as an appreciation to Rabbi Kanievsky,” he explained. “Therefore, in her name, the rabbi told us that the best thing to do is to open a fund which will be collecting money, and through that money we can carry on, as much as we can, the things with which she helped everybody.”

It looks like Rav Chaim Kanievsky is becoming a specialist in rodents, and his blessings and advice are particularly effective with mice.

We already had the story that happened recently where Rav Kanievsky advised someone to give maaser in order to get rid of mice he was having a problem with.

Now we have another story with Rav Kanievsky and mice.

The head of an institution dealing inkiruv went to Rav Chaim Kanievsky looking for advice. He laid it all out saying how his institution is in tremendous debt, to the tune of $24,000, and because of it he might have to shut down for good. The burden has become too much for him and his family.

Rav Kanievsky told him not to shut the institution but to keep dealing in kiruv despite the debts and difficulties, and everything will be fine.

A few weeks later the fellow began some light renovations on the building housing the institution. During the renovations, he noticed he had a problem with mice. Looking further, and laying traps, he discovered where the mice were coming from. He discovered the hole in which they were living, and when he pried it open he found, besides for the mice, two dusty boxes full of old silver coins.

Upon further research he discovered each coin was worth $160, as they were rare coins from the time of the British Mandate. He went to rabbonim to ask what to do with them, if he could keep and use them, which after some research he was told he could keep them.

He went home and opened the boxes to see the spoils of war. Between the two boxes he discovered that he had 150 coins, worth $160 each. That gave him a grand total of $24,000 - just enough to perfectly cover his debt. (source: Bechadrei)

Disabled US Children on an Unforgettable Chai-Lifeline “Wish at the Wall 2011″ Visit to Israel

Arutz Sheva TV met the Chai-Lifeline “Wish at the Wall 2011″ trip as they visited the city of Bnei Brak. The group came to meet Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky and Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky to receive their brachos for health and well-being.

The “Wish at the Wall” trips bring to Israel children who could not get to Israel any other way.

Arutz Sheva met last year’s group at the Kosel. That was a group of children who were dealing or had dealt with cancer along with their parents.

This year’s trip is for teens coping with serious chronic, and sometimes fatal illnesses. These young men and women are determined to overcome physical limitations and experience all that Israel has to offer. They are accompanied by a parent and ChaiLifeline’s medical staff.

After they were received happily at the airport by the staff of the trip, the group set out to a large variety of locations throughout Israel including - the Old City of Yerushalayim, Masada, Ein Gedi, the Knesset, northern Israel and the city of Bnei Brak. During the tour the young boys and girls met rabbonim, soldiers, politicians and others.

On Monday night chol hamoed sukkos, Maran HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita, made a trip to Yerushalayim to visit his father-in-law, MaRan HaRav Yosef Shalom Eliyashiv Shlita, daven maariv at the Kosel, and make a few other private visits.
