COMMENTS IN HONOR OF THE SEDUOS PREIDAH OF DOVID SHIMSHON FEIGEN'S INDUCTION INTO THE LONE SOLDIER PROGRAM OF THE IDF -- 10-13-2014
Good evening, and a Gutten Moed.
I usually speak to judges and juries in my professional capacity as a civil trial attorney. Tonight, I am speaking to you in my capacity as a neighbor, as a Shul member, as a Kohein, and as a friend.
For years, I have sat next to Rabbi Yehuda Feigen at the Shabbos morning Kiddush in Shul and at the Shabbos afternoon Shalosh Seudos. We schmoozed about small talk, anything and everything.
Many times, his son Dovid would sit between us, and little by little, I got to know this young man. At first, he was a bit quirky, sharing with me his corny jokes and exploits (with parking tickets, social media, and the laws). But for the most part, he sat in between his father and I as we schmoozed about stuff.
But one Shabbos afternoon during Shalosh Seudos, as I was doing my thing - monopolizing the conversation with other men at the table, advocating my unique brand of pro-Israel positions, when suddenly, this cute kid to my right, chimed in, joined the conversation, and offered his astute and accurate observations and commentary about the successes of Iron Dome, about the integrity and morality of the IDF, about arab atrocities and human rights violations, about the UN’s hostility towards Israel, and about President Obama’s ambiguous and confusing support for Israel.
My jaw dropped, and I did a double-take as I took in Dovid Shimshon’s articulately worded commentaries. I suddenly stopped in my tracks monopolizing the conversation and took serious heed of what this ‘kid’ was saying.. I was absolutely floored and impressed with him and his message. I mentioned to him that I have a blog entitled American Trial Attorneys in Defense of Israel, and the next thing I knew, he asked for my business card because he wanted to check it out for himself.
And since then, I have looked forward to my weekly encounters with Dovid at the Shabbos Kiddush and Shalosh Seudos, because his keen insights on Israel and her neighbors were, and are, 100% on the money. He is very well-read young man and very proficient in this area. His facebook postings about Israel (which I have read) reflect his strong values and his stronger commitment to a safe Israel.
When I learned that Dovid is volunteering to serve in the Tzahal - the Israel Defense Forces, as part of it’s Lone Soldier program, I was not surprised and was in absolutely in awe of the man that this ‘quirky’ joke-telling kid has become. The child has become a man and a leader and an example to us all.
I’m in awe of him, and for good reason. Dovid could easily live in the lap of luxury, and enjoy life like a happy go lucky teenager; with solid financial and emotional from his loving parents: my good friends: Rabbi Yehuda & Simi Feigen. But Dovid seems to be made from a different clothe. He is far more altruistic, far more driven, far more focused, and not seemingly interested in living a “soft” idyllic life in LA. He wants to serve his People and he wants to protect Klal Yisroel and he wants to protect the Land of Israel. If that does not floor you, I don’t know what would. This kid is amazing. His parents are also amazing for supporting him fully. But his parents are not the focus of tonight’s gathering and I’m sure that they will forgive me for passing on their praise and rather focusing on their son. But they deserve the praise as well.
While other Israeli kids look desperately for ways to get out of this kind of public service, to dodge the draft to the IDF, Dovid is reaching out from the other side of the world, from the relative safety and security of Hancock Park, to be one with his People and is volunteering to serve.
Make no mistake, this is not an adolescent whim nor a crazy teenage joy-ride. This is very serious business and Dovid is as focused as ever on doing this well. Because he wants to make Aliyah and live in Israel, he wants to do his share and serve. This is beyond honorable.
Tonight's Seudas Pereida is loosely translated as a Celebration of Separation. But I will not agree with the definition. I will be praying for your welfare everyday and will remain connected to you in my Tefilos sending you good thoughts awaiting your safe return.
In honor of Dovid Shimshon, I thought it would be befitting to read to you an amazing letter by IDF Colonel Ofer Winter, the commander of the IDF’s Givati Brigade; which is an infantry brigade of the Israel Defense Forces, and serves as its amphibious force. Givati soldiers are designated by purple berets. The Brigade's symbol is the fox, alluding to Shualei Shimshon (lit. Samson's Foxes), a unit in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Ofer Winter’s letter was official dispatch sent to battalion and company commanders on July 9, 2014 and it came came as Israel geared up for possible ground operations against Hamas in the Palestinian territory in Operation Protectiver Shield in Gaza. The ground incursion involved the Givati Brigade. Ofer’s letter inspired and gave moral clarity to our entire people:
“We have been bestowed a great privilege to command and serve in the Givati Brigade at this time. History has chosen us to be on the cutting edge of the war against the terrorist enemy, the “one of Gaza” [cf. Yehoshua 13:3] who curses, reviles, and defames the G-d of the battalions of Israel. [Cf. Dovid’s encounter with Golias, the Plishti, Shmuel I 17:10, 26, 36, 45.] Let us prepare and ready ourselves for this moment when we accept upon ourselves this mission with a sense of agency and complete humility and with a readiness to put ourselves in danger or give up our lives in order to protect our families, our nation, and our birthplace.
Let us work with resolve and strength and with initiative, strategy, and hard work in our encounter with the enemy. We will do everything we can to fulfill our mission to cut down the enemy and to remove fear from the people of Israel. Our credo is “We do not return before the mission is done.” Let us work and do everything we can to bring back our boys in peace by utilizing every means at our disposal and with any effort that is required.
I am relying on you, on each and every one of you, to do your duty in this spirit, the spirit of Jewish warriors who go out in in front of the camp. “The spirit which is called ‘Givati.’” I lift up my eyes to Heaven and say with you, “Shma Yisrael, Hashem Elokeinu, Hashem Echad.” May Hashem, the G-d of Israel, bring success in our mission in which we stand to do battle for the sake of Your people Israel against the enemy who curses Your Name.
In the name of the warriors of the IDF generally, and in particular, in the name of the warriors and commanders of our Brigade, may Hashem act and fulfill in us that which it says in the pasuk, “Hashem your G-d goes out with you to do battle with your enemies for you to save you” [Devarim 20:4], and let us say Amen.
"Together, and only together, will we be victorious."
Ofer Winter, Aluf Mishneh, Commander, Givati Brigade”
I mentioned that I am a Kohein, and as such, I would like to bless Dovid with a Birchas Kohein, and I ask that Dovid come up and allow me to bless him

Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues,
A few weeks ago, I crossed the most incredible finish line of any bike ride in the world! The feeling of exhilaration as I rode into Chai Lifeline’s Camp Simcha is something I can still feel and know that I will continue to feel for weeks. You see, the 175-mile ride into Camp Simcha is not about the months of training, the fundraising efforts, or the swag. This 175-mile ride is about bringing smiles to the faces of kids who have many reasons not to smile. The kids at Camp Simcha have one terrible thing in common: they all have cancer or other serious illnesses that rob them of their childhood, and those amazing smiles we take for granted on our own kids. It’s the smiles I saw as I rode into Camp Simcha that are going to keep that feeling alive for me for weeks to come!
However, I didn’t cross this incredible finish line alone. As my valued sponsors, YOU crossed that line with me! As a partner with me, you helped bring smiles to the faces of kids with cancer. You gave them a reason for hope, a reason to fight, no matter the pain and isolation that comes along with their diseases. Thank you for being my partner.
Chai Lifeline is so much more than Camp Simcha! My wife and I are chairs of Chai Lifeline’s Young Leaders division and through our involvement we have come to see just how much Chai Lifeline does every single day in Los Angeles, on the West Coast, across the country, and in other parts of the world. In their own quiet yet professional way, without fanfare, they do tremendous things – getting a kid in to see a doctor in New York within 2 days when it normally takes 4 or 5 months; battling an insurance company to cover a little girl’s chemotherapy; bringing meals to siblings at home while parents are at their son’s bedside in the hospital, just so they have one less thing to stress about; and much, much more!
Thank you so much for helping me get to the finish line, thereby supporting this incredible organization. If by chance you would like a deeper understanding of what the organization does to impact sick children going through the fight of their young lives, as well as their families going along for this horrible journey, please feel free to contact myself or Ryan Hyman. I have copied Ryan on this email, and if you would like to spend a few minutes of your time to meet in person and learn firsthand why Chai Lifeline is not only a critically important organization, but why it means so much to me too, by all means, please reach out to one of us.
Regards,
Matthew Kest

The Sefer Torah in the attached pictures is the Sefer Torah that was dedicated on the top (and inside) of the Hermon last year to the Nahal Brigade’s 932nd Battalion. It is they who brought the Sefer Torah with them in Gaza and read the Torah for both parshiot Matot and Ma’asei while in Beit Hanoun. The case was originally for holding TOW missiles and it was re-designed a bit to fit the Sefer Torah in a more mechubad manner. It is the only Sefer Torah to have been brought in to a combat zone and read regularly by the soldiers. Now that’s a Jewish army!

Israeli soldiers dancing before Gaza entry: "We Have No one Rely Upon Except Our Father In Heaven"
Moments before these Israeli soldiers enter Gaza and place their lives at risk for the sake of the Land of Israel, they prepare themselves by singing and dancing songs of faith in the G-d of Israel. They are singing:
1) "The whole world is a narrow bridge and the main thing is not to be afraid" - a famous rabbinical phrase
2) Serve G-d with joy and come before Him with song
3) "We Have No one Rely Upon Except Our Father In Heaven"

Sanz Rebbe Menachem Avel The Mother Of Terror Victim Eyal Yifrach HY"D
The Sanzer Rebbe Shlita was among the many being menachem aveil at the home of the families of the kedoshim HY”D. The rebbe visited with the Yifrach family, the parents of Eyal HY”D. The rebbe explained “אין כל בריה יכולה לעמוד במעלתם ובמחיצתם של קדושים”.
The rebbe spoke with Mr. Yifrach explaining the level of the boys who dies Al Kiddush Hashem and the mission, they the parents were selected to fulfill. He explained “our existence as the Jewish People is dependent on our steadfast emunah in HKBH”, praising their actions during recent weeks.
When the rebbe finished being menachem aveil, he got up and went to the women’s section and spoke with Mrs. Yifrach, explaining to her that she and the other women were MeKadesh Shem Shomayim around the world.
"The boys have a definite zchus in that the world came together and did so much good and engaged in so many tefilos, this is a great zchus for them and the families.
Moreover, rebbe said that the way in which the parents conducted themselves is such a Kiddush Hashem. They showed the world how to deal with tragedy. This calamity is more than any human should have to handle, and they have handled it with tremendous courage, faith and strength of character. That lesson to the world shall be a merit for them to feel even an iota of Nechama which is seemingly impossible upon such a tragedy, and may this lesson bring the ultimate redemption."
As the search for the boys continued, the rebbe was mispallel for them as the Kosel.
In other Sanzer news, Sunday night 9 Tammuz 5774 marks the 20th anniversary of the Sanzer Rebbe ZT”L ZY”A, the Shefa Chaim of Sanz. Thousands are expected to be visiting the kever which is located in Kiryat Sanz section of the beis chaim in Netanya. In Mosdos Sanz around the world, yahrzeit seudos will be held. The ohel around the kever will remain open the entire day Monday, 9 Tammuz.
The rebbe shlita is expected on Monday as well. Police are stepping up security in the area in anticipation of many many mispallalim. There will be special limudim in all yeshivos affiliated with the chassidus on the yahrzeit.
Talmon, Israel - Search Team Members Who Found Teens' Bodies Pay Emotional Shiva Call To Sha'ar Family
Talmon, Israel - Members of the civilian search team who first discovered the dead bodies of the three murdered Israeli teens made an emotional Shiva call to the home of 16 year-old Gilad Sha’ar’s family home, telling his parents and mourners, “Thank God we found them.”
NRG.co.il (http://bit.ly/1ktaG1S) reports that the searchers arrived at the gate to the family home accompanied by the IDF Judea and Samaria Division commander, the commander of the Etzion, and several rabbis.
Uri Schaechter, a civilian volunteer who aided in field scans alongside IDF scouts and soldiers, told Gilad Sha’ar’s father Ofir Sha’ar and assembled mourners that, “We did not know if they were dead or alive. We just went in hopeful. With all the pain, thank God we found them. It could have taken years. We gave our effort night and day, and the help from the people was amazing. The volunteers who brought us food and drink, it was all part of a national effort.”
Ofir Sha’ar thanked the searchers, saying, “Every time we went to say thank you we had the feeling that the army was with us. We saw all your red eyes from crying and fatigue, and that gave us such a feeling of gratitude and appreciation. We knew you were making every effort to find them alive. From the top down to the very last soldier, you assumed they were alive. The cooperation between the soldiers and civilians, that reality is a reflection of the the unity that happened in Israel and worldwide.”
Bat Galim, Gilad’s mother, said, “We timed the arrival of rabbis alongside senior military personnel. While the search was ongoing we had a tent in the yard of the Torah, 24 hours a day to teach here the Torah that we knew needed the combination of Siifa and Safra. Did Moses’ hands make war? Tell us we messengers, but we did not choose it. I wish I was that age to us. Am not from what they tell us.”

Israel Navy Soldiers Sing Shabbat Song At Sea; צפו: קבלת שבת בים בדרך לתפיסת הספינה
As Shabbat began last week, these soldiers had already set sail to stop Iran's weapons shipment from reaching Gaza terrorists. In the middle of the sea, they all sang "Shalom Aleichem" -- a Shabbat song meaning "peace be upon you." Days later, their successful mission brought peace upon the entire nation of Israel. They are our heroes. Shabbat Shalom.

Rabbi Stern of Teaneck; worked to aid jobless (Robbi Yossi Stern ztl was one of my heroes - he will be sorely missed)
Rabbi Yossie Stern of Teaneck, whose Jewish charity, Project EZRAH, has helped thousands in Bergen County challenged by unemployment and financial distress, died Friday. He was 64.
The cause was complications of heart surgery, said Rabbi Steven Pruzansky, spiritual leader of Congregation Bnai Yeshurun, where Rabbi Stern was a member.
More than 1,000 people attended the funeral Saturday night at the Teaneck synagogue.
Project EZRAH — the word is Hebrew for “assistance” — had its roots in the trying days after 9/11.
After Congregation Bnai Yeshurun learned of a middleaged father of five in dire employment and financial straits, Rabbi Stern — a Brooklyn-born educator and jeweler — pushed to establish a helping network “because he realized there could be many others who needed assistance in finding jobs or retraining,” Pruzansky said.
Rabbi Stern’s goal initially was to offer help with job searching and basic living expenses. Today, the Englewoodbased non-profit he founded and directed offers a variety of services, including career counseling, fiscal planning and budget management, and aid for catastrophic needs. Among those in the Jewish community assisted by Project EZRAH was a divorced woman who lost four of her children in a 2005 Teaneck house fire.
“The need for employment opportunities and financial aid increases each day,” Rabbi Stern said in a 2010 interview with The Jewish Standard. “Many people are earning less than before, and their mortgage becomes a much higher percentage of their income than it used to be.”
Helping others was in Rabbi Stern’s nature, Pruzansky said. For many years, Rabbi Stern went to the synagogue at sunup daily to meet with a group of people who could not read Hebrew well “to get them mainstreamed into the conversation,” Pruzansky said.
“He had a tremendous heart,” Pruzansky added. “When Yossie saw a situation where someone was suffering emotionally, financially or psychologically, he felt innately that he had to do something to ameliorate that person’s plight.”
Rabbi Stern, who was buried Sunday in Israel, is survived by his wife, Rifka; his daughters, Dvora Marcus and Naava Schreiber, both of Israel; sons Shai Stern and Effie Stern, both of Los Angeles, and many grandchildren.
