Thousands murdered in Syria, so UCI targets Jews building homes

The "Associated Students of UCI" (University of California-Irvine) met last night and voted, 16-0, to divest from various companies that do business in Israel.

The targeted companies include Caterpillar (of course,) Cement Roadstones Holding, Cemex, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Raytheon, Sodastream and L-3 Communications.

The reasons given are the usual mix of flat-out lies and absurd exaggerations. The resolution says that Israel practices "apartheid", that it levels entire neighborhoods in refugee camps (I have yet to hear UNRWA mention that one,) and that it " ruthlessly level[ed] civilian dense regions" during Cast Lead.

Of course, ASUCI has nothing to say about the hundred of people likely to be murdered in Syria today, or about institutionalized discrimination against Palestinian Arabs in Lebanon to the extent that they cannot build houses or hold many jobs, or against Hamas celebrating the firing of deadly rockets at Israeli schoolchildren this week, or of the daily incitement in official Palestinian Arab media to destroy Israel completely.

No, they are far more concerned over Israel building a wall to stop suicide bombers.

Years of anti-Israel and anti-semitic [in the case of Sodastream] indoctrination pays off. UCI's professors and administration must be so proud.

The executive board of the student government has yet to approve this absurd measure that targets the right of self-determination of Jews. We'll see if they have any more sense or if they also get swept up in the pogrom-like mentality of viciously attacking anything to do with Israel.

(h/t Jennifer)

UPDATE: A little searching shows that UCI uses HP printers, multi-function copiers, desktop computers - and servers.

Have fun convincing the data centers to replace all their equipment, guys!

YNET: The right to fight boycotts; While Boycott Law is not perfect, Israel has right to defend its security interests, by Morton A. Klein

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) has been widely quoted on our position on Israel’s new internal anti-boycott law, which strongly implied ZOA opposes it. ZOA’s position is much more nuanced than that, especially after fully examining this new Law as we publicly promised to do.
Israel is under existential threat from many countries and peoples around the world, enduring an organized worldwide campaign to boycott, divest from and sanction (BDS) the Jewish state. Israel is also watching with deep concern as its neighbors are undergoing dramatic change, which could bring even more radical Islamist, anti-Israel, anti-US, and anti-West governments into power.
We, in America, thankfully do not have to worry about and deal with these kinds of threats. Therefore, the ZOA believes that Jewish organizations should be very careful about telling Israel how to protect its security and economic interests, especially when enemies of Israel and outright anti-Semites are using the words of Jewish organizations that criticize Israel to encourage and promote their own external boycott, de-legitimization and sanction efforts against Israel.
Commentary’s Jonathan Tobin wrote, “…those seeking to implement boycotts are not merely expressing criticism of government policies but are, in fact, waging economic warfare on Israel…Israel’s foes are not, as some in this country falsely assert, merely objecting to its possession of the West Bank and the city of Jerusalem but its very existence.”
Indeed, when other countries have felt these types of substantial threats they have frequently gone so far as to have invoked Martial Law, suspending certain rights that citizens normally enjoyed.

Anti-Israel boycotts immoral

Despite its initial apprehension about the new law, after closely examining it the ZOA now sees that it has eliminated any criminal penalties for boycotting Israeli products or institutions, and allows only civil remedies such as fines and eliminating government funding to violators.
The New Israel Fund has falsely claimed that the bill “criminalizes freedom of speech,” while Gush Shalom falsely stated the law is “a death sentence for the right to freedom of expression.” The anti-boycott law applies to any area under Israeli control. The global BDS movement targets all of Israel, even within the Green Line, and explicitly rejects the existence of Israel within any borders.

Hence, the ZOA is now more sympathetic with the Knesset’s actions even though the law is not perfect. For example, its wording is vague, and therefore could be interpreted to apply to any boycott of an Israeli citizen or anybody for almost any violation and as such could cause a “chilling effect on all boycotts.”
Eli Hertz, a member of ZOA’s national Board, reminded us that even the United States protects Israel from boycotts, and in a stronger way than the Israeli law does. He wrote:
“The Anti-boycott laws under the US Export Administration Act of 1979 (as amended in August 1999) were written specifically to protect Israel from the Arab League and other Moslem countries…On Monday, July 11, 2011 the Knesset passed an Anti-boycott law against those who promote and call to boycott Israel…A look at the US Anti-boycott laws objectives, should be helpful in defending the Israeli law.”
At the end of the day, the ZOA is firmly opposed to boycotting Israeli goods, services, cultural and sporting events anywhere in the world. A boycott against any part of the Jewish state of Israel, a human rights loving democracy, is wrong, immoral, despicable, and frequently anti-Semitic.

Stand With Us is sponsoring a BIG day. That's Buy Israeli Goods day.

StandWithUs is urging schools, campuses, synagogues, community organizations, and individuals to celebrate Israel by designating March 30 as the day to buy up Israeli goods at local stores.

The date was chosen because the anti-Israel boycott campaign has planned a global boycott of Israeli products for the same day (March 30). Protestors will stand outside stores, asking shoppers not to buy Israeli products.

"We need to show the boycotters that their efforts are doomed. Let the boycotters know that when they call for boycotts of even one or two stores or products, they will face a much larger movement to buy Israeli goods," said StandWithUs co-founder and CEO Roz Rothstein. "We are telling people to go to their local stores, request the exact Israeli products being targeted, and buy them out. Let store managers know they should keep Israeli products well stocked on the shelves."

StandWithUs, in partnership with the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, successfully countered a similar boycott day on November 30, 2010. They mobilized Israel supporters in every store that the boycotters had targeted worldwide. Shoppers bypassed the protesters and bought out entire Israeli product lines. Delighted store owners said it was their best shopping day and promised to keep their shelves stocked with the targeted products.

March 30 is an opportune day for Israeli products because the Jewish holiday of Passover is in April this year. Shoppers can choose presents from the wonderful array of Israeli-made items, from fine Israeli wines to the high-quality Ahava beauty products, Israeli-made jewelry, shoes, clothes, and food, including Sabra or Tribe hummus and Osem cookies

"We must defeat the boycotters who advocate destructive, instead of constructive, measures, who undermine hopes for peaceful coexistence, and whose only goal is to cripple and damage Israel," Rothstein emphasized. "We can only do this by joining together to be part of BIG."

Visit www.BuyIsraelGoods.org-The Web site includes a store locator so people can find stores in their area that carry Israeli products. The BIG campaign is a partnership between StandWithUs and the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce. StandWithUs is encouraging Israel's supporters to take videos and photos of themselves purchasing the products and submit them tobig@standwithus.com.

StandWithUs created a flyer listing "Six Reasons You Should Oppose Boycotting Israel" atwww.standwithus.com/flyers/pdfs/saynoboycottsflyer3.pdf. One reason, the flyer lists, is that boycotting Israel hurts the peace process by encouraging hard-liners and "does nothing to help the Palestinians improve their lives." Shoppers should buy both Israeli and Palestinian products as "an investment in peaceful coexistence."

StandWithUs has released an online button promoting the campaign for supporters to post to their Facebook walls. A physical button is also available to pin on your clothes, attach to your key chain, etc. Pick it up fromwww.standwithus.com
