Hamas Chief Renews Call for Jihad Against Israel
Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal on Sunday praised the political changes that are taking place in Egypt, Agence France Presse reported. Meshaal said that the revolutions breathed new life back into the terrorist group’s agenda to continue its jihad against the Jewish state. “The first step (to liberating Jerusalem from Israeli occupation) is refusal to negotiate with Israel... and to establish a new, reconciled Palestinian position based on jihad,” he said. The Iranian-backed terrorist group is hopeful that a new Egyptian government will permit weapons transfers from the Sinai Peninsula into the Gaza Strip and renounce the peace agreement that Cairo signed with Israel in 1979.
PA Negotiator: Hamas Not a Terror Group
The Palestinian Authority (PA) wants to have Hamas removed from the U.S. and EU list of terror organizations so as to pave the way for the Islamist movement to join a Palestinian unity government, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday. “We are seeking to have Hamas removed from the list of terror organizations,” said PA negotiator Nabil Sha’ath. “We want EU countries to recognize a Palestinian unity government that would include Hamas and other factions.” This PA objective comes despite Hamas not changing its positions on three American, EU, Russian and UN demands: that it recognize Israel, cease all terrorist activities and abide by previous Israeli-PA agreements.
Iran Supplying Taliban with Rockets
NATO forces have seized the most powerful Iranian-made rockets ever smuggled into Afghanistan for the Taliban’s upcoming spring campaign, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. Allied forces seized 50 122-millimeter rockets in a three-truck convoy in southern Nimruz, near the Iranian and Pakistani borders. The rockets have a range of up to 13 miles and explode in a burst up to 80 feet wide. These rockets are twice as powerful of the previous 107 millimeter rockets provided by Iran to the Taliban since 2006.
Muslim Brotherhood Leader Prays for Israel’s Destruction
A prominent member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood this week became the first member of the Islamist group to visit Iran, where he praised Tehran’s leadership and denounced Israel, The Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday. “Egypt and the world of Islam as a whole need leaders like President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,” said Kamal El Helbawy. “Every night when I go to bed, I pray to wake up the next day to see Israel is wiped off the map.” El Helbawy is considered the Muslim Brotherhood’s face in the West and called for Egypt to become “a true Islamic state.” The group is Egypt’s best organized political faction and is hoping new constitutional reforms in the country will allow it to participate in parliamentary elections.
Syria Seeks Libya’s Seat on U.N. Human Rights Council
Syria is seeking Libya’s seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council after the Gadhafi regime was suspended from the council for its “gross and systematic” violations and brutal suppression of human rights, Israeli news outlet Ynet reported Thursday. Syria has a long track record of human rights abuses. “The Assad regime runs a notorious police state that denies the Syrian people the right to free speech and freedom of assembly, jails journalists and tortures dissidents,” said U.N. Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer. “It sponsors some of the world's most vicious terrorist groups and has assassinated numerous journalists and opponents in Lebanon.” The council is notoriously anti-Israel and has voted to make the Jewish state the only permanent agenda item that is discussed at every meeting.
Israeli Invention: Germ-Free Food Packaging
An Israeli invention could revolutionize the way perishables are packaged, extending shelf life by banishing bacteria, Israel 21c reported Thursday. Graduate student Ronen Gottesman developed a silver nanoparticle-coated paper that could be used as a new food packaging material. It could provide an easy alternative to preservation methods such as radiation, heat treatment and low temperature storage. The coated paper showed potent antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, two causes of bacterial food poisoning. It killed all of the microbes in just three hours. “In the future, people could coat any packing material, like plastic bags, paper and cartons, to keep the food fresh for a longer time,” said Gedanken. “It is bacteria that causes food to rot.” A large number of companies have contacted him about it, mostly from the United States and one from the United Kingdom.
