Tisha B'Av Laws compiled by Rabbi Shlomo Einhorn

  • Starting at Chatzot (12:58pmMonday, there is a minhag not to learn anything which one not be able to learn on Tisha B'Av.
  • We continue to refrain from eating meat or drinking wine.
  • One generally has two meals before the fast. The first meal is ideally eaten before mincha. This meal has no defining elements and is simply in place to help one fast better.
  • After mincha we partake of the Seudah Hamafseket (closing meal). The custom is to eat just bread (some dip the bread in ash) and water for this meal. This meal is eaten in isolation on the ground. Some eat a boiled egg dipped in ash.
  • On Tisha B'Av itself we refrain from eating, bathing, anointing our bodies (deodorant should be put on before the fast), wearing leather shoes, regular Torah study, and relations.
  • Ritually washing one's hands is done by washing until the knuckles. Washing after using the restroom can be done in the normal manner.
  • Talit and Tefilin are not put on until after Chatzot on Tuesday. Tzitzit are put on in the morning, albeit without a bracha.
  • We do our best to sit low to the ground until Chatzot.
  • Most of the laws of the 9 days continue until Chatzot on Wednesday.
